Reduce Systolic Blood Pressure To 120 For Longevity

Category: Lifestyle Articles

The national heart, lung and blood institute recommends reducing systolic blood pressure below 120 millimeter of mercury (MMHG) using medications if necessary.

The new recommendation stems from a study of 9,300 people, which showed that lowering blood pressure below 120 reduced the risk of heart attack by 33% and premature death by 25%, compared to the old target of 140 mmHg. High blood pressure promotes blood vessel disease, kidney disease and heart failure. Systolic blood pressure is the higher blood pressure number that represents the pressure generated from the heart as it contracts.
