Danish researchers from Aarhus University, led by Dr. Anne Amstrup, found that women consuming 3-5 milligrams of melatonin daily for one year decreased body fat by nearly 7% and increased lean mass by 5.2%, compared to a placebo treatment (fake melatonin). There were no differences in weight, body mass index or blood sugar regulation between the experimental and control groups.
