Increased Risk Of Heart Failure Linked To High-Sugar Soft Drinks

Category: Lifestyle Articles

We are in the midst of a heart failure (HF) epidemic. Heart failure affects nearly 5.8 million people worldwide

One in five people have a lifetime risk of developing the problem. The risk of coronary artery disease and stroke has decreased in recent years. The survival rate for heart failure patients is worse than cancer. Factors such as obesity, high blood fats and hypertension increase the risk of heart failure – just as they do for coronary artery disease and stroke. Swedish researchers from Karolinska Institute in Stockholm found that consumption of high –sugar drinks increased the risk of HF. In a study of 42,000 older men, those who drank two high-sugar drinks per day were more likely to develop heart failure within 11 years.
