Side effects include heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, erectile dysfunction and abdominal obesity. Standard treatment goals in people 60 and over are to lower systolic blood pressure with drugs to below 150 mmHg and diastolic pressure below 90 mmHg. In people over 40, the goal is to reduce systolic pressure below 140 mmHg. A landmark study by the SPRINT Research Group – heart disease researchers from throughout the U.S. – showed that aggressively lowering systolic blood pressure below 120 mmHg with fatal and heart attack, compared to a group following standard blood pressure reduction strategy. People in the aggressive treatment groups suffered more drug side effects, including bouts of low blood pressure, fainting, heart rhythm abnormalities and kidney failure.
