DHA reduces muscle inflammation after intense training

Category: Nutritional Articles

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that is a structural part of the brain, skin, sperm, testicles and eyes.

Fish oil is the most significant dietary source of DHA. Many studies suggest that DHA reduces inflammation and the risk of heart disease. Spanish researchers found that supplementing DHA (1.6 grams per day for 8 weeks) reduced blood markers of inflammation and promoted muscle blood flow in soccer players. DHA reduced whole-body inflammation in intensely training soccer players.  Some inflammation is essential to fitness adaptations, so the practical implications of this study are unknown.
