green tea extract: the good, the bad and the ugly

Category: Nutritional Articles

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a polyphenol found in green tea extract that enhances the action of insulin, improves blood vessel health, lowers blood pressure and promotes weight loss.

However, a study on mice from Penn State University found that EGCG was toxic to the liver, but pre-treatment with the same supplement reduced its poisonous effect. While they might have some beneficial effects, they could also have serious effects.
