Stress Slows Recovery From Intense Weight Training

Category: Lifestyle Articles

Stressful life events such as death of a spouse or family member, marriage or relationship problems, work stress, sexual difficulties, financial problems, changing residence or school or the holidays increase the risk of illness.

Life stresses can also impair recovery from intense workouts, according to a study led by Matthew Stults-Kolehmainen from the University of Texas. Greater life stresses in experienced weight trainers and athletes, as measured by the Holmes and Rahe stress scale, reduced energy levels and increased fatigue and muscle soreness in the days following an intense weight-training workout. Athletes should consider their personal situation when designing training programs and recovery intervals.
